Lookup Hart County Jail Custody

Hart County Jail is the local county jail for Hart County, Georgia, and it is the first place to check for many recent arrests, short local holds, and people waiting for transfer after sentencing. A Hart County Jail inmate lookup starts with the county custody system, not the state prison locator, unless the person has already moved into Georgia Department of Corrections custody. Families, attorneys, and records users should treat the jail as a local detention facility and use the state and federal systems only when the custody source has changed.

Hart County Jail Overview

Hart County Jail is operated by the Hart County Sheriff's Office. The current jail address used for custody and facility lookups is 2825 Bowman Hwy, Hartwell, GA 30643, and the jail phone listed by the Georgia Department of Corrections Hart County Jail location page is 706-856-5338. The sheriff's administrative office is separate from the jail address. Hart County lists Sheriff Chris Carroll at 890 Vickery St., Hartwell, GA 30643, with the sheriff's main office phone at 706-376-3114.

The facility is a county jail, not a state prison. Hart County's 2025 inmate-health-care request for proposals describes the jail population as mostly people awaiting trial and sentenced inmates waiting for transfer to state custody. That distinction matters when searching. A new arrest or a person still waiting on a local court case belongs in the Hart County Jail inquiry path. A person who has already been sentenced and accepted into state prison custody should be checked through GDC Find an Offender.

The GDC location listing is also useful because it confirms the Bowman Highway address and direct jail phone in an official state source. GDC's Hart County Jail listing is shown in the screenshot below.

The image supports the main lookup route: use the jail address and jail phone for local custody, then move to state systems only after a transfer.

Hart County Jail Capacity

Hart County's June 2025 inmate-health-care RFP gives the strongest sourced population and building detail for Hart County Jail. The RFP describes a new 58,770-square-foot jail with a maximum capacity of 230 inmates. It also states that the average daily population at the proposal point was 150 inmates, with a possible future increase to 200. The same RFP explains why the population can change: Hart County was planning to house more inmates from other counties, so the jail count is not always a simple count of Hart County residents arrested in Hart County.

230 Maximum Capacity

The sourced average daily population was below maximum capacity at that RFP point. It should not be described as overcrowding without a later official count showing that condition. The RFP also points to a real operational split inside the jail: pretrial detainees, local sentenced people, and sentenced-transfer inmates can all be present under one county jail roof.

Find Hart County Jail Inmates

No official Hart County Jail public web roster, booking report, or mugshot gallery was found on the county or GDC pages reviewed for this build. That absence is important. A searcher should not assume a private jail site has the current Hart County custody record. For a current county-jail inmate, start with the jail desk at 706-856-5338. If that line routes the inquiry elsewhere, call the Hart County Sheriff's Office at 706-376-3114 and ask how current custody, bond, charge, and release status are handled.

  1. Call Hart County Jail at 706-856-5338 and ask whether the person is currently held there.
  2. Give the full legal name, date of birth if known, approximate arrest date, and arresting agency if known.
  3. Ask whether a booking number, public charge information, bond status, or release status can be provided by phone.
  4. If the person has left the jail, ask whether the next step is an Open Records Act request, court lookup, GDC lookup, BOP lookup, or ICE lookup.

If staff cannot release the detail by phone, ask for the correct records custodian and request route. Georgia's Open Records Act materials from the Attorney General and the state open-records overview explain the general public-record framework, but the request still needs to go to the office that keeps the record. For Hart County jail records, that may mean sheriff, jail, or county open-records routing, depending on the record requested.

Note: Do not use Whitworth Women's Facility or GDC as the first lookup path for a new Hart County Jail booking.

Hart County Jail Contact

Use the jail contact for current custody questions and the sheriff's administrative line when the jail directs the inquiry there. The two addresses serve different purposes. The Bowman Highway address is the current jail address confirmed by GDC. The Vickery Street address is the sheriff's administrative address listed by Hart County, and the county's contact directory gives an additional sheriff department email route. Calling first is especially important because official jail lobby hours, visitation intake rules, and records-window hours were not published in the source set.

Hart County Jail Visits

Hart County did not publish an official jail visitation schedule, visitor ID rule, dress code, child-visitor rule, attorney visit procedure, video visit vendor, or remote visit fee table in the official pages reviewed. That means the safe path is to call the jail before traveling, before bringing a child visitor, and before relying on any schedule copied by a third-party jail directory. County jail rules can change because of staffing, housing status, medical restrictions, court transport, discipline, or emergency orders.

Visitors should also ask where to park and which entrance to use. The research file did not find a visitor-parking map, overflow parking rule, public transit route, or ADA entrance instruction for the jail. The facility is separate from the courthouse and sheriff's administrative address, so courthouse parking assumptions may not fit a visit to Bowman Highway.

Hart Jail Mail and Money

Official Hart County sources did not publish a jail mail format, commissary vendor, money-deposit vendor, tablet provider, phone provider, or fee table. Do not send funds or mail based only on a private directory. Call the jail first and ask for the current rule, the exact name format, whether a booking number is required, what items are banned, whether legal mail uses a different address, and whether money can be deposited in person or through an approved vendor.

Hart County Booking Intake

A person arrested in Hart County may be taken to Hart County Jail for intake. The exact local sequence was not posted as a public checklist, but the RFP confirms medical receiving screening and health assessment requirements. Intake commonly involves identity checks, property inventory, warrant and hold review, fingerprinting, a booking photograph, charge entry, medical screening, and classification. Classification means the jail decides housing based on security, medical needs, mental-health needs, separation concerns, and observation needs.

Booking charges are not always the final court charges. The jail record starts with the arrest and intake side of the case. After that, the prosecutor and court determine the formal case path. For court filings after a Hart County arrest, the Clerk of Court describes criminal and civil document research through ICON after contacting the clerk at 706-376-7189. That court route is separate from the jail custody phone line.

When GDC Takes Custody

Hart County Jail can hold sentenced inmates awaiting transfer to state custody. Once the person is moved to GDC, the county jail is no longer the best public search point for day-to-day prison location. Use GDC Find an Offender for state prison custody. That system is for people currently in GDC facilities, including Whitworth Women's Facility in Hart County when assigned there.

Federal and immigration cases use different tools. The BOP locator covers sentenced federal prisoners from 1982 forward. ICE ODLS is for immigration detention and cannot be used to search people under 18. A federal pretrial detainee may be tied to the U.S. Marshals rather than a public BOP profile. The first question is always which system has custody right now.

About Hart County Jail

The 2025 RFP describes a jail with medical infrastructure that includes a large medical ward, numerous exam rooms, doctor and nurse office space, and secure medical rooms. It also states that Hart County retains responsibility for physical security, food, linens, non-medical services, housekeeping, dietary services, building maintenance, hygiene supplies, and linen supplies. Medical and mental-health services are handled through the RFP scope, while custody and security remain county functions.

Program information for education, work release, faith services, tablet access, or reentry services was not published in the official county jail sources reviewed. That gap should be handled as a call-first issue rather than filled with assumptions from other Georgia jails. Hart County Jail is also distinct from Whitworth Women's Facility, even though both are in Hart County. One is a county jail. The other is a GDC state prison.

Note: Confirm custody, visitation, mail, and deposit rules with Hart County Jail before traveling or sending funds.
